REVIEWS: GEAR - TECH - TRAILS - RACES
|
posted by Tom Gagliardi - October 6, 2011
There are a few reasons why I decided to write a review on this bike.
First of all the Some DC is one of my favorite bikes to ride, secondly
it has a 29" mtb wheels
set, and
lastly because it's
cyclo cross season. A cyclo cross bike for me is
primarily a training bike. It gets lot of use in the off season,
used on rainy days in-season rides, long endurance rides, used for my
vacation bike...and yes raced
in one or two cyclo cross races in the fall. My last CX bike was a
Salsa Chili Con Crosso, which weighed in at 16 lbs. and was a much more
race oriented bike. Seeing that racing was a small part of my CX bike
needs and that disc brakes were approved in the cyclo
cross scene, I set out to build the perfect CX bike for me. Read Full Review

Hope Ceramic External
Bottom Brackets
posted by Tom Gagliardi - July 1, 2011
This might be the single best upgrade I've
ever put on one of bikes. I recently installed in on my Niner Carbon
One 9 with a set of XTR-970 Cranks (Home Brewed Ti Chainring and
Guard). At first I wasn't thinking much of it. I needed a new bottom
bracket and decided to try something different. I knew it was different
as soon as I installed it. A slight spin of the crank arm in the stand
and the cranks wouldn't stop spinning, and on the bike the lack of
resistance is definitely noticeable. This is my first ceramic bottom
bracket and I completely sold. The only problem is that now I want a
few more for the rest of my bikes. (specs: ceramic bearings - 113 grams
- compatible with: Shimano, Race Face and Others - Paid $160 at
Universal Cycles)

This review is gonna be easy, why you say?
Because this fork is the best damn bike component I have ever come
across, that is why!! I have to say that this fork is a must have for
anyone riding a hard tail or SS hard tail (Not sure why anyone rides
with gears, but we will discuss that at another time), if you can't
afford this fork, GET A RIGID!!

My sister that lives on Maui got married
last week. Of course I had to make the trip, and unfortunately my wife
and kids decided not to make the trip. I found myself in a rare
situation. I was going to Maui for five days with no wife and kids.
What? This is Crazy. So I started thinking...hmm maybe I should bring a
bike. After spending some time on the internet reading about some of
the riding on Maui I decided on bringing my cyclocross bike which is a
steel Soma Double Cross with disc brakes and a Stans Crest/American
Classic 29er wheelset that I built up (DT Rev spokes). It really is a
cool bike and it turned out to be a great choice of bikes for the Hana
Loop. The carbon road bike might have been a nice pick for the climb up
Haleakala to 10,000' (see video of Haleakala climb at end of review). Read

What motivated me to right a review on these
tires? I've tried my share of 29er tires and I keep coming
back to the Ardents. I noticed the other day that
three of the four mountain bikes in my garage have Ardents on
them (except the Pugsley...wish they made 4" Ardents). This
is by far my favorite 29er tire that I've ridden. To me it's
the perfect balance between a tire that really hooks up and provides
traction and a fast rolling tire. Sure it's not as fast as
some of the super low profile, light weight racing tires that are out
there, but it rolls along just fine. Read Full Review

I am an avid cyclist. For me it is all about
the bike, all bikes. Road, Mountain, beach cruisers’ etc…But the
majority of my time is spent on the road bike. A few years back I
entered the Vermont 50 mountain bike race and to do so I needed a
mountain bike, I purchased a Specialized Stump Jumper Marathon 29er.
The race was a disaster….fast forward one year and I had been somehow
convinced that turning my Specialized 29er into a single speed was what
I need to do, so I did. After the 2nd-3rd hour of riding this thing I
was pretty hooked on single speed mountain biking. The only logical
thing to do was to look for a single speed specific frame. Read Full Review

Do I need to say it? Sexy - Fast - Light -
Single Speed. I really wanted this bike last year but due to
production issues I had to wait. Well, it was well worth the
wait. Having owned Air9's and One9's previously I knew the
sizing and geometry was perfect for my riding style. Niner
has really nailed the 29er geometry.

I had seen this race advertised but missed
it last year. What really sealed the deal for signing up this year was
meeting some of the guys that put on the race; we camped next to each
other at the Wilderness 101 ultra endurance race down in State College
PA and they bailed me out of a bind by lending me a cone wrench right
before the race. They said I could borrow the tool if I signed up for
their race in November, and I told them I would be there. Read

Finally a 29er with enough travel to be
considered a free-ride all-mountain bike. With 5.5" of travel and 29"
tires the WFO9 is ready for just about anything you can through at it.
I've been riding the WFO9 for about two months now and this review is
long overdue. Read

Starting out as an out of shape 40 year old,
I was re-introduced back into mountain biking last year from a buddy
who at any given time owns at least 6 bikes, or 4 that his wife is
aware of. With his advice I bought a new Gary Fisher HiFi 29er deluxe.
With a solid summer of riding under my belt, huge wheels and 30 pounds
lighter, I began entering a few races in the Cat III / beginner
category, with encouraging results. Fired up by the way these races
went, I began to dream of signing up for a mythical race that several
of my riding buddies had already entered a couple of times, the
Wilderness 101 - the epic 101 mile back country mountain bike race
through central Pennsylvania. Read Full

After seeing these tires on a friends bike I
decided to give them a try. WTB lists the width as a 2.55", but it
doesn't look it to me. I have 2.4's that look just as big. It's a
fairly light tire for the size, on our scale it weighed in at exactly
800 grams. Read

So much for the simplicity of single speed,
but how can you resist. Built up with Formula R1 Brakes, Stans 355's,
Chris King ISO Discs, XTR Cranks....the bike built up at 20 lbs. 13
oz....and that's with Maxxis Ardent 745 gram tires!
I just returned from a two day trip to the
Kingdom Trails in East Burke, Vermont, the perfect testing grounds with
over 150 miles of well maintained single track. Read Full Review

I'll preface this review by saying that this
was my fourth 100 mile MTB race and my first one riding a single speed.
I couldn't convince any of my riding buddies to make the trip from
Connecticut with me so I dragged the wife and two kids along...I'm
pretty sure they didn't have as much fun as I did. We rented a cabin
located about 25 minutes from the White Water Center where the race
starts. It wasn't overly convenient, but the accommodation were nice
and the whole area is really beautiful. Read Full Review

Praise to the Chumba gods. A hard tail,
29er, single speed, free ride bike, designed with a relaxed geometry
for a 5 inch fork...holy smokes!!!
I've been riding this bike for six or seven
months and it's by far the most solid 29er frame I've seen, and the the
relaxed geometry with a 120mm fork create a unique setup for a hard
tail 29er. Read
